Aurora Borealis

}Name: "Aurora Borealis" Latin for "Northern Dawn"
}One of the most impressive natural phenomena
}First recorded incident: “La Caverne de Lascaux” SW France
}Fascinates and terrifies humans
}Aurora Legends: Every northern culture has oral legends about the aurora, passed down for generations

Medieval Age

People believed that the polar light is a bad omen.
Fearing the red light.

Especially
while it is very rare in Middle Europe.

The aurora was for example described as heaven
battles or as candles

Fridtjof
Nansen

This Norwegian polar explorer tried to reach the north pole with his ship Fram in 1895-96

He was blocked by ice but made many woodcuts and drawings about the aurora

Solar Winds

}Solar winds are caused by energy released by the sun
 }Extension of Sun’s corona

 }High speed plasma

A long way towards earth

}Interactions with the Ionosphere – solar wind (speed 450km/h) carries a weak magnetic field

}Interaction between this and the magnetic field of earth
}Changes form of the earth‘s magnetosphere
}energy dissipates into gaseous form, causing Aurora’s or stays in electric form
}Dangers: Interrupting satellite transmissions / power grids

Morphing the magnetic field
Earth has a magnetosphere surrounding the planet. Solar wind flowing
past the earth. Solar wind and the magnetosphere are two electrically
conducting fluids with magnetic fields. Plasma and atoms collide. Energy
flow causes a change in magnetic field

Magnetosphere
}Earth has a dipole magnetic field similar to a bar magnet
}Invisible magnetic field lines entering at the north pole, exiting at the south pole
}periods of high solar activity interaction between the solar wind and magnetosphere
}solar winds effect the comet shape

Forming of Auroras
}Repeat: solar wind collides with atoms of the upper atmosphere
}Altitudes of 80-200km
}Frequency usually follows the 11-year sunspot maximum cycle.
}Peak 3 years after the peak of the sunspot cycle.

The Aurora Oval
1.The aurora is often visible at high latitudes
2.Magnetic field pressure is strongest
3.Most often: Oval located between 65 and 75 degrees latitude
4.Oval ranges from 500 to 1500 km in width
5.Zone statistically defined

HOLIDAY

Last holiday I went to Taman Safari with my family. I went there at 05.00am from Bandung. At 08.00am we arrived in Cisarua Street, but suddenly the street was closed. Cisarua Street would opened again at 11.00am, that would took a long time for waited. Until someone came and offered us to used shortcut and my father accepted it. That shortcut was very hazardous. Mini or short car (like sedan or jazz) couldn't pass through that shortcut. Finally we arrived in Taman Safari at 12.00am. Taman Safari was full of car, we got traffic jam on the way entered Taman Safari. We must saw and fed the animals in the middle of traffic jam. However I felt a bit dissapointed cause we stuck in traffic jam, I still felt happy cause i could saw the animals and can fed them like when i was child.  I saw Zebra, Giraffe, many kinds of tiger, Lama, Linsang, Deer, and many more.
After we saw and fed the animals, we lunch in a  restauran around there. In front of the restauran there is elephant show, so we can saw that show inside the restaurant. After ate we went to Cowboy Show's place. We went there by train inside Taman Safari. We sat in the fron seat. I really enjoy watched that show. That was fantastic! It looked like real,  I got splash water and the fire was real. I really like that show! After watched that show we decided to go to the bungalow. On the way went to bungalow we got traffic jam again. It took a long time arrived in bungalow. Finally, we arrived in bungalow at 06.30 pm. Then we relax in there caused we felt tired always stuck in traffic jam. When we felt enough for relax, we went to restaurant for ate cause we already felt hungry. The scene in the restauran was amazing! It was so beautiful! I saw two white goose and one black goose in the small pretty lake. We went back to the bungalow and slept. We didn't go to Safari Night cause we felt very tired.
In the morning, we ate in the same restauran like last night, but the scene its not too beautiful like last night. Cause we wanted to saw and fed the animals again, we immediately back to the bungalow and prepare all of our stuff. In order we afraid of stuck in traffic jam. After check out we bought some vegetables again for fed the animals. Maybe we were unlucky, we got traffic jam again. But this time its not too bad like yesterday. We fed and saw the animals again like yesterday. Then we went to Recreation Park. First we watched Seal Show and we watched Tiger Show. I felt little bit scared when watched tiger show. Cause we already felt hungry, then we ate in the resaurant near Tiger Show. In Recreation Park there are many rides too. We rode some rides in there. Suddenly I saw 4D movie room. Me and my brother want to watch 4D movie. So, we watch 4D movie. That movie is about horror movie. I didn't felt scary cause I like horror movie. After watched 4D movie, we watched Acrobatic Show, that was the last show. That show was fantastic! Actually we still want to stayed in Taman Safari but tomorry my father must work again so, we need to go home. We went back to Bandung at 06.00 pm. On the way went back to Bandung, Saparua Street was closed again. We must wait an hour and half if we want to pass that way. Finally we arrived in our home at 10.30 pm. The Greedy Man

Once upon a time in Riau, lived a pair of husband and wife. They were very poor. The wife was very diligent, while the husband was very lazy. He just slept and slept everyday. He did not want to help his wife to earn a living. The wife was helpless, she often prayed to God to help her husband.
One night the husband had a dream. In his dream, an old man came to him. He told the husband to take his sampan and went to river. "Go to the middle of the river and wait until a rope appears from the river. Take the rope slowly, and then you will find a golden chain. You can cut and take it, but don't take the chain too long," said the old man. The husband then woke up from his dream.
In the next day, the husband took his sampan and went to river. He wanted to do the old man's advice as said in his dream last night. "Where are you going?" asked the wife. She was so surprised to see her husband was busy preparing the sampan. "I want to go fishing, Honey. See you later!" the husband didn’t want to tell his wife about his dream. He knew his wife would think he was crazy by following up a dream.
After the husband arrived in the river, he rowed his sampan until he reached the middle of the river. He then looked around the water surface very carefully. Suddenly a rope appeared from the river. "The old man was right!" said the husband to himself. He then slowly pulled the rope and at the end of the rope he saw a golden chain! The chain was sparkling and glowing. It was made from pure gold. "Wow! It’s really made of gold. I’m rich. I’m rich," the husband said happily. He kept pulling the chain. He forgot the old man's advice to take only short chain because it was enough for him. The poor man became greedy. He wanted to take the golden chain as long as possible.
While he was busy pulling out the golden chain, a bird came to him. It talked, "Remember the old man's advice. Take only a short golden chain." But the poor man ignored the bird and kept on pulling out the chain. Slow but sure, his sampan was full of the golden chain. It was so full that finally the sampan could not hold the weight any more. The sampan started to drown. The golden chain was sinking and went to the bottom of the river creating a big wave in the river. The wave almost swallowed the poor man. He was so panicked. He swam as fast as possible to the river side.
When he arrived on the river side, he felt sorry to himself. He blamed himself for being a greedy man. But it was already too late. But then he realized that it was a lesson for him to work hard if he wanted to earn money.

Switzerland is a landlocked located in the Western Europe region of Europe. Switzerland borders France to the west and Italy to the south. Also Austria and Liechtenstein to the east and Germany to the north. The conveniently central location of Switzerland and neutral status has made this country the center of banking for Western Europe.           Geneva ’s world famous lakefront is the centerpiece of the city and offers endless opportunities for recreation and relaxation throughout the year. The Jet d’Eau spouting 140 meters into the air is the world’s tallest and symbolizes Geneva’s heritage as a leader in the field of hydraulic power. The Promenades along the left and right banks of the lake are filled with cafés, parks, street markets and other diversions from lake cruises to amusement rides to water skiing. The Bains des Paquis on the western shore has been a crowd favorite since its opening in 1932 and continues to draw visitors and locals alike who flock to its saunas and unique bathing areas to see and be seen along this sunny concrete jetty. Dominating the eastern bank, the giant Flower Clock in the English Garden is a tribute to Geneva’s watch industry, harmonizing Swiss ingenuity with the floral bounties of nature. Geneva ’s ancient Old Town is a maze of sloping cobblestone streets and alleyways filled with cafes, boutiques and historical landmarks at every turn. Across the street, the Old Arsenal is a former battery, now home to a 1949 mosaic by Alexandre Cingria depicting Caesar’s arrival in the city 58 BC. Finally, The Treille Promenade on the south side of the Old Town was once an artillery post and today offers beautiful views of the city from atop the towns last remaining rampart wall.

Larger than life statues of Guillaume Farel, Jean Calvin, Théodore de Bèze and John Knox dominate the central part of the 100 meter wall, eternally guarding over their “City of Refuge.”

 Schtrumpfs Building

Location in 23-29 Rue Louis-Favre. Named after the French word for the “Smurfs,” the Schtrumpfs is a modern architectural landmark located in the funky Les Grottes neighborhood behind the train station.
